How to Do Your Own Home Window Repair
Window repair is an important task that homeowners should take seriously because damaged windows can be the cause of serious water damage in a home. Whether it is due to condensation from damp seals or a cracked pane, this type of damage can be costly and require immediate attention.
If you suspect that a window is leaking, immediately shut it and check for any water leaks. You can use a wet cloth to feel for a slight pool of water or a noticeable change in the appearance of the window. If you notice a pool of water around the window, it is time to make an emergency call for professional help.

To repair a leaky window, remove the trim and any glazing putty that is holding the glass in place. This might require the use of a screwdriver or prying tools. Then, you can clean the sash and frame thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris.
You should also remove any deteriorated glazing compound that might be coating the surface of the glass. Glazing compound is a thick liquid used to hold the glass in place and seal it to the window frame. You can purchase it at most home improvement stores.
Once you have removed the old glazing compound and cleaned the window, you can apply a new coat of glazing compound with a brush or spray can. The compound should be a little thinner than the previous layer, but it should still cover the entire area around the damaged window. If the compound has a sticky residue, remove it with a rag or paper towel.
Then, place a piece of tape on the inside of the glass to cover the hole or spot. You can use any type of tape to create a temporary fix, but duct tape is one of the best options available.
Another option is to replace the broken pane with a new piece of glass. You can order a large sheet of glass from most home improvement stores, or you can cut it yourself. Be sure to order it at least 1/16 inch shorter in all directions than the old glass and make sure to test fit the pane before installing it.
If the new pane is wider than the old one, add a small piece of wood to the top and bottom of the pane for added stability. This will prevent the replacement pane from shifting during installation.
You can also use a piece of wood to hold the insert in place, which should be fastened with exterior-grade screws. Be sure to drive one screw for every foot of insert.
Once the replacement insert is in place, press it tightly against the exterior casings or blind stops to secure it in place. You can then adjust it to a square fit by shimming it under the sill and behind the side jambs, until the unit opens and closes smoothly.
You can also remove minor scratches in the glass by using white toothpaste or mildly abrasive liquid soap. After cleaning the affected area, rub it with a light touch of toothpaste to smooth out the surface.
